This Privacy Policy explains how Makaan (“Makaan,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, discloses, and retains personal information when you use getmakaan.com and related websites, applications, communications, and services that link to this Policy (collectively, the “Platform”). Our mailing address is Chicago, Illinois, USA.
This Policy applies to visitors, account holders, users who suggest or review listings, and representatives who claim or manage business or organization listings. Some sections apply only if the corresponding feature is available and you use it. Third-party websites and services linked from Makaan have their own privacy practices.
Depending on how you use the Platform, we may collect the following categories of personal information:
We collect this information to operate, secure, personalize, measure, and improve the Platform; display and manage listings; communicate with you; process payments; prevent fraud and abuse; comply with law; and support the other purposes described below. We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. Retention depends on the purpose, account status, legal requirements, and the criteria in Section 14.
Account and profile information. When you create or update an account, we may collect your name, email address, profile image, display name, biography, city or neighborhood preference, and other profile fields you choose to provide. If you sign in through Google or another identity provider, we receive the information that provider makes available according to your settings, such as name, email address, profile image, and an account identifier. We do not receive your identity-provider password.
Business and organization information. When you suggest, claim, or manage a listing, we may collect your name, business email or phone number, role, authorization information, and listing details such as business name, address, hours, website, category, photos, descriptions, certifications, and community-relevance information. Much of the listing information is intended to be public.
Owner-identified Muslim-owned information. An authorized representative may voluntarily identify a business as Muslim-owned. Because that statement may reveal or imply religious affiliation, we treat it with additional care. If submitted for a public badge or filter, the designation will be public. We do not infer religion from names, appearance, language, ethnicity, nationality, address, or similar characteristics, and we do not request proof of personal religious belief as part of ordinary badge self-attestation.
Content, reports, and communications. If enabled, we collect content you submit, such as reviews, ratings, photos, listing corrections, event suggestions, business responses, moderation reports, support requests, and messages. Do not submit sensitive personal information about yourself or another person unless it is necessary and you have the right to provide it.
Payments. If you purchase a paid plan, a payment processor such as Stripe collects payment-card and billing information. Makaan does not receive or store full payment-card numbers. We may receive transaction identifiers, plan, subscription status, billing contact details, amount, currency, invoice, refund, dispute, and limited payment-method information such as card brand and last four digits.

Explore and discovery measurement may use a random browser or account identifier to understand which listings were displayed or opened. We seek to avoid attaching raw search text, precise location, or raw IP address to lightweight discovery-measurement events unless needed for security or disclosed at collection.
We may receive or collect information from:
Publicly sourced information may still relate to an individual, such as a sole proprietor. We use it to create, verify, update, attribute, and moderate directory content and to communicate about a listing. A business representative may request correction through our contact methods.
Depending on features used, sensitive personal information may include precise location, account credentials handled by an identity provider, private message content if messaging is enabled, and religious affiliation voluntarily implied by an owner-identified Muslim-owned designation. We use sensitive information only as reasonably necessary to provide the requested feature, maintain security, verify and display a voluntary designation, comply with law, or as otherwise disclosed with consent.
We do not use sensitive information to infer characteristics for targeted advertising, and we do not use a person's religion as the sole basis to deny access to listing or promotional services. You may remove a voluntary ownership designation through available listing controls or by contacting privacy@getmakaan.com.
We may use personal information to:
Makaan may use rules, automated tools, and AI-assisted services to organize listings, identify duplicates, summarize publicly available listing information, estimate confidence in attributes, detect spam or abuse, and help moderators review submissions. These tools may make mistakes. Material listing rejection, removal, or sensitive-attribute decisions should include human review when reasonably practicable.
We may send limited listing content or user-submitted text to service providers that supply AI or moderation tools. We seek to minimize personal information sent for those purposes and do not intentionally submit full payment-card numbers or use a person's voluntarily stated religion as the sole reason to deny access. If a public AI-generated label or summary is displayed, users and business representatives may request correction.
We may disclose personal information to the following categories of recipients:
Service providers. Providers that support hosting, databases, authentication, maps, analytics, email, notifications, payments, storage, real-time features, error monitoring, customer support, security, content moderation, and AI-assisted processing. They process information for us under contractual or other legally recognized restrictions. Current providers may include Vercel, Neon, Google, Stripe, Ably, and email-delivery providers, depending on enabled features.
The public and other users. Information you submit for public display may be visible to anyone, including search engines. This may include display name, profile image, review, rating, photo, listing details, owner-identified Muslim-owned designation, event information, and business response.
Businesses, organizers, and third parties you choose. When you contact a business, follow an external registration link, request a service, or use another third-party feature, we disclose information as needed to complete your request or direct you to the third party. If an event uses an external RSVP or ticketing provider, the information you submit there is collected by that provider, not Makaan, unless we clearly state otherwise.
Legal, safety, and business transfers. We may disclose information when reasonably necessary to comply with law or legal process; protect rights, safety, property, and security; investigate fraud or abuse; enforce agreements; or establish and defend claims. Information may also transfer as part of a merger, financing, acquisition, reorganization, bankruptcy, sale of assets, or similar transaction, subject to applicable law.
At your direction. We may disclose information with your consent or at your direction, including when you use a sharing feature or authorize an integration.
Before submitting content, review whether the field is labeled public. Public content can be copied, indexed, shared, or retained by others outside Makaan's control. Do not publish private religious, health, financial, identity, contact, or location information about another person without permission.
Deleting an account does not necessarily remove public content immediately. We may remove, de-identify, or attribute public contributions to a generic user, subject to legal, integrity, dispute, backup, and recordkeeping needs.
Makaan can generally be used without device location. If a nearby feature is enabled and you grant permission, the Platform may use device-provided location to return nearby listings or events. Unless a feature tells you otherwise, precise coordinates are used for the current request or session and are not retained as a user history. We may retain a less precise city, neighborhood, or region preference.
You can revoke location permission in your browser or device settings. Maps and directions opened through third-party services are governed by those services' privacy policies.
Makaan does not sell personal information for money and does not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising as those terms are defined by applicable U.S. state privacy laws. We do not knowingly sell or share personal information of individuals under 16. If our practices change, we will update this Policy and provide required opt-out mechanisms before the change takes effect.
Disclosing information to service providers that process it for our business purposes, displaying information you intentionally make public, or completing a transaction you request is not treated as a sale under many privacy laws. You may still contact us with questions or use Your Privacy Choices.
We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Policy, including providing the Platform, maintaining listing integrity, securing accounts, resolving disputes, enforcing agreements, and meeting legal, tax, accounting, and recordkeeping requirements. Retention depends on the type of information, sensitivity, account status, feature used, and legal obligations.

We may retain de-identified or aggregated information that cannot reasonably be linked to you. Where law requires a specific retention disclosure, the more specific notice presented with the feature controls.
We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information, such as encrypted network connections, access controls, authentication, logging, vendor controls, backups, and security review appropriate to the Platform's size and the information involved. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Use a strong and unique login method, protect your device, and notify support@getmakaan.com if you suspect unauthorized access. Makaan maintains internal processes to assess and respond to security incidents and will provide legally required notices when applicable.

You may use available Settings controls or email privacy@getmakaan.com. Describe your request and the account or email involved. We may verify your identity and authority, including for an authorized agent, and may deny or limit a request when permitted by law. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law. You will not be discriminated against for exercising a privacy right.
You can opt out of marketing email through the link in the message. Transactional and security messages may continue while you have an account or active transaction. Browser push and device location can be disabled through your device or browser settings.
This section supplements the rest of the Policy for residents of states with applicable comprehensive privacy laws. Makaan may not currently meet every law's business thresholds, but we use this section to describe our practices and will honor verified requests where required.
Categories collected and purposes. During the preceding 12 months, depending on features used, Makaan may have collected identifiers; customer-record and profile information; commercial information; internet and device activity; approximate geolocation and opt-in precise location; professional or business information; user content; inferences about directory interests; and sensitive personal information consisting of opt-in precise location and voluntary religious-affiliation information associated with an owner-identified badge. Sources and purposes are described in Sections 3 through 8.
Categories disclosed. We may disclose the categories above for business purposes to service providers supporting hosting, database, identity, maps, analytics, payments, communications, storage, security, moderation, and AI-assisted tools; to the public when you intentionally submit public content; and to legal or transaction parties as described in Section 9. We do not sell these categories or share them for cross-context behavioral advertising.
California rights. Where the California Consumer Privacy Act applies, California residents may request to know, access, correct, or delete covered personal information; request information about categories of sources, purposes, and recipients; and opt out of sale or sharing. Makaan does not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. We use sensitive personal information only for permitted purposes reasonably necessary to provide requested services, maintain security, verify voluntary public designations, and comply with law.
Submit requests through Settings when available or privacy@getmakaan.com. An authorized agent may submit a request with proof of authority; we may require direct confirmation or identity verification. We do not offer financial incentives for personal information and will not discriminate against you for exercising applicable rights.
The Platform is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 submitted personal information, contact privacy@getmakaan.com so we can investigate and delete it as appropriate. Users between 13 and the age of legal majority should use the Platform with the involvement and permission of a parent or legal guardian.
Makaan is operated from the United States. If you access the Platform from another country, information may be transferred to, stored in, and processed in the United States and other locations where our service providers operate. Those locations may have different data-protection laws. Where legally required, we will use an appropriate transfer mechanism.
We may update this Policy as the Platform, laws, or data practices change. We will post the revised Policy and update the effective date. If a change materially affects how we use previously collected personal information, we will provide additional notice or obtain consent when required. We encourage you to review the Policy periodically.
